Andrew, you said it very well. I also would love to hear rational, civilized, intelligent debate. I for one can admit that I'm ignorant on some important issues, and one way to learn is to examine the arguments of advocates of both/all sides of the issue.
I am dying for news and discussion that offers less breadth and more depth. NPR does offer this, but I think there's plenty of room for many network (or even just individual shows) to embrace this method. The "drive-by," sound byte method isn't doing me any friggin' good, I'll tell ya that. Who needs it?
I even turned to the Free Speech (http://www.freespeech.org/fsitv/html/aboutus.shtml) and other "alternative" channels on the Dish Network feed, and it's just like your description of Air America, only magnified in volume, coked up and on steroids. On this channel, I've seen militant homosexuals licking up their own semen (I'm not kidding) and Hispanics dancing with strap-on dildos jutting out of their asses (still not kidding) on that channel, but not a Republican, Libertarian or regular-Joe voice. Ironic and disappointing that the "Free Speech Channel" is the first one to strangle opposing viewpoints - it kills me.
If anyone reading this knows of online or broadcast media that goes beyond the 6-minute news splat, let me know - I'm interested.

I felt the exact same. Before Air America I figured I hated talk radio because it was conservative. No I realize I just hate talk radio because it is talk radio. And Tom, great point - there is definitely more room in the market for something else like NPR that is not NPR. In fact, more and more I've been reading about disgruntled NPR employees and I wish they would get together and form their own intellegent and responsible alternative.

Liberal or conservative doesn't matter. Talk radio sucks. I used to listen to sports talk on my way to work. Those people are morons too.
All they do is bitch and moan. The people who actually call in are even stupiderer. If they can speak in complete sentences rather than sputter sentence fragments, all that they do is parrot what has already been said. In other words, impress the host.
