andrewphelps.com: Starbucks: my sixth place

Since you're not one to cry about privacy violations, why does the presence of security cameras feel uncomfortable in a coffee shop? I generally assume I'm being taped whenever I go out in public these days.

...then again, I tend to worry that people are bugging my car, laughing at me when I loudly argue with myself during solo drives, so it's possible I'm a bit paranoid.

    Stephen,

There's a difference between privacy concerns and the creepy feeling of someone watching you.

I must recruit you for my new movie. Getting rid of the security cameras will help the mission.

    Andrew,

But why you care if people are watching you? I mean, you're in public, right?

  • Andrew Phelps · 5 years ago

    Stephen,

Yes, I know I am in public at Starbucks and people are watching me. As you know I am a public figure and like being watched. But there is a difference between knowing the audience (the woman sitting across from me) and not knowing (Who is behind the video camera? Is it even on?).

Also, there is a difference between cameras on street corners watching me walk down the boulevard and cameras perched above me while I read for two hours in a chair.

I guess I just don't get why it bothers you, Andrew. Chalk it up to simple difference in preferences, or personalities.

I can understand why Starbucks is taking the end of your stick here, but like Stephen said above nearly every other public store has security cameras. It's creepy for you to know you're being watched, but security cameras are something they let you see - think about what you're not aware about. I also encourage you to write another comment card criticizing Starbucks for their universal $.40 charge for soy milk. Soy milk is now just as expensive as, if not cheaper than, regular milk. I've been to many mom-n-pop coffee shops that do not charge extra for soy. Whether or not they absorb the extra cost or not, soy is definitely going to cost them more because they are buying it in a much lower volume than Starbucks. Starbucks is making a ridiculous amount of money on this extra charge and I don't think that it's right.
